Level Design

For a detailed description of the attacks, refer to the  FDD .
The phases are linked in this document as well.

Actors

from this point, I will refer to the actors as follows:

"Echidna"
  • refers to the humanoid part of the boss
  • wields magic
  • can summon creatures

"Snake"
  • refers to the snake headed tail part of the boss
  • attacks Zagreus with strikes and leaps
  • can spit poison

Boss Movement

The Echidna is a mostly stationary boss. She has one spawn point at the edge of the stage and moves slightly around said point. During some Snake attacks, the Echidna is inactive as the Snake takes control of the whole body.
The Snake part changes location during some attacks.

Requirements

Requirements change with each Phase.
→ The level structure can change for the different phases.
The fight takes place in Erebus, a stage similar to the Charon boss fight, although the rivers or pools of Styx can be of any shape, as long as the requirements are fulfilled.

Phase I

In  Phase I , the Player needs plenty of room to dodge attacks quickly and precisely.

The phase is full of attacks that traverse the whole level and deal damage in an area.
All attacks ignore environmental cover.
The Player needs to be able to move quickly without getting caught on the environment while dashing.
Traps are possible.

Phase II

In  Phase II , the Snake needs pools or rivers of Styx to jump into while the Player needs room to dodge the AoE damage attacks, maneuver through the Snake's body, and deal damage to the body.

This phase only contains the Snake Leaps during which the Snake needs pools or rivers of Styx scattered around the level to follow the Player.
Its body builds a dashable wall as it is dragged behind, blocking the Player from freely walking through the level.
The Player need to be able to dash onto any islands that form in the level without being caught on the environment.
The level structure can change during the initiation sequence of the phase.

Phase III

In  Phase III , the Player needs plenty of room to dodge attacks quickly and precisely.

Requirements are the same as for Phase I with the addition of summons.
The summoned wretches appear at the edge of the stage, out from the River Styx.
They remain there, attack, and disappear into the river again.

Phase IV

In  Phase IV , the Snake needs pools or rivers of Styx to jump into while the Player needs room to dodge the AoE damage attacks, maneuver through the Snake's body, and deal damage to the body.

Requirements are the same as for Phase II.
The level structure can change during the initiation sequence of the phase.
The level structure can stay like its last state after the boss is defeated.

End

The Player is transported back up to the entrance to Elysium.
